Jason Bachman – Owner, Vision City Consulting

From Farm to City – helping cities thrive by providing frameworks to complicated issues

What led you to this type of work, helping cities thrive?

I went on a youth mission trip to Chicago, IL the summer of my junior year in high school.  Felt a calling to do work/ministry in the city and have been pursuing that emphasis for over thirty years now.

Currently, what are you doing?

I work for a global non-profit, primarily helping local communities, church and community leaders reach their city through outreach efforts, and compassion training.  To date, I’ve led or influenced 100+ of these events, reaching 250K+ people, mobilizing 8K+ volunteers, and training well over 1K leaders.

So, why Vision City Consulting ?

I think there is something of value in collaborating with the leader of the city in the same ways I’ve collaborated with leaders of the communities (pastors, business, community agencies, etc.).

Mayors help shape culture and direction for their cities and I feel that VCC can provide clarity, direction, and encouragement towards helping those mayors lead their cities into a thriving reality.

What makes you different from other consultants?

I grew up on a farm in North Dakota, competed in wrestling my entire school career and have an MBA in Business Administration.  I equate those three experiences to giving me grit and ability to systematize ideas while organizing practical steps to make it happen.  I want to work myself out a job; what I consult on helps transform cities and systems for good and focuses on transformation from the inside out.

It’s like when teaching healthy compassion principles; you never want to create dependency. You want to create pathways for people/organizations to thrive.

What have been some of your influences?

For starters, I lived in S.E. Washington D.C. for some time in 1995.  It was a cross-cultural experience that helped me see the value and beauty of other cultures.  I lean towards some of the community development principles of John Perkins (Christian Community Development).  I like business reads that touch on systems and leadership. (Built to Last, A CEO Only Does Three Things, etc.)

Ray Bakke’s book, A Theology Big Enough for the City helped shape a view on how God sees the city.  From that, my faith influences me to believe that God wants all cities to thrive.

What can people expect if they work with you?

Vision City Consulting will communicate well with you.  You’ll receive a lot of questions that will help VCC consult the best solutions that fit your stage and scope. Zoom calls will be the primary consultation venue that helps generate the recommendations and suggested action plans.

VCC will create, publish, and send you the recommendations along with suggested implementations for you to consider in making your city better.

In all of this transformation work, don’t expect it to be easy, or a one-size fits all. Do expect that good things will come if you decide to embrace and commit to the process.

What’s the next step?

If you’re interested in improving the systems, culture, or quality of life for people in your city, look at the menu of frameworks (consulting options) that Vision City Consulting works on.  Complete the questions to see if this solution will work for you, we’ll set up a Zoom appointment, you’ll fill out an additional questionnaire, we’ll do the Zoom call, VCC will send you a recommendation document, and you’ll decide what you want to implement and do for your city.
